How to Properly Clean Your Windows: Our Tried-and-True Cleaning Process

Windows are essential to your home’s beauty and comfort; they provide a glorious view of the outdoors, protect the inside of your home from the elements and they let in sunlight to brighten up your home. Because they are so key to a home, they receive a lot of action. It’s a good idea to keep your windows clean so that they keep functioning as they should.

Window glass can get dirty pretty easily, even sooner with little hands or pets in the home, but luckily glass cleaning is pretty simple. Many McComb Window & Door windows have features that it make it less painful to clean the exterior of your windows from indoors, too. Looking for a simple, new window cleaning process? Here’s what McComb Window & Door swears on:

  1. You can start by brushing off your window sill with a small broom or brush. The dirt and dust that accumulates on the sill and ledges will get stuck there for a long time otherwise, and doing this first will also prevent smearing on the glass later on. You should not use the same cleaning rag that you will eventually use to clean the glass!
  2. Run your vacuum’s dusting brush attachment on the side of your window screen that faces indoors. You can also use this vacuum piece to grab any leftover dirt and dust around your sills.
  3. Use a premixed vinegar-based cleaning solution, or an ammonia-free glass cleaner like Windex® or Sparkle® to get your glass clean. You can make your own vinegar-based solution by mixing one-part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Apply your cleaner generously to a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel and wipe down your glass from several different directions for the best clean.
  4. After the cleaning, let your windows air dry and then rinse your glass with clean water if you see streaks.

Here are some more tips, too! We recommend cleaning your windows on a cloudy day because the sun will dry the cleaning solution too fast and leave streaks on your glass. Also, our McComb Window & Door professionals favor microfiber cloths since they are the least likely to leave tiny particles behind.

Take care of your beautiful view, protection barrier and light source by keeping your windows clean throughout the year.
